Two-way light switch — works from one switch but not the other

A stair, hallway or bedroom light on two-way switching only behaves from one position — the other switch does nothing, or the light only works with the switches in certain combinations. Classic after a switch has been replaced.

Safety first

Switch wiring is live work territory — isolate the lighting circuit and prove dead before pulling any switch off the wall. Two-way straps can be fed from the OTHER end: don't assume dead because the local switch is off.

Isolate, lock out / tag out, and prove dead before working unless a live test is specifically required, authorised, and carried out under proper supervision. Always follow local regulations, your site procedures, and the equipment manufacturer's documentation.

    Common and strap conductors mixed up on a replaced switch

    Most likely

    The classic. On a two-way mechanism the COMMON must land on the common terminal, with the two straps on L1/L2. Swap the common with a strap and the light only works in some switch combinations.

    A one-way switch or mech fitted where a two-way is needed

    A one-way mech only has two terminals — it physically can't do the changeover. The circuit then only responds from the end that still has a proper two-way mech.

    A broken or disconnected strap between the switches

    One of the two strapping conductors is broken or off its terminal, so the changeover only completes in one switch combination.

    Loose termination at either switch

    Least likely

    A strap or common that's fallen out of its terminal behaves like an intermittent or one-combination-only fault.

If it passes

If every flick changes the state, the switching is actually healthy — look at the lamp/fitting instead.

If it fails

If it only responds in certain combinations, it's a common/strap mix-up or a broken strap — carry on.

2. Isolate the circuit and prove dead. Pull the suspect (usually the newest) switch and identify the mech: does it have common + L1 + L2 terminals, and which conductor is on the common?
A genuine two-way mech, with the conductor that tests as the common (see next step) on the common terminal.
3. Still isolated: continuity-test the switch mech itself — common to L1 in one position, common to L2 in the other.
Continuity alternates cleanly between common–L1 and common–L2 as you flick the switch.
4. Continuity-test each strap end-to-end between the two switch positions (both straps, one at a time, with the circuit still isolated).
Both straps show near-zero ohms end to end.

Common mistakes apprentices make

  • Assuming the wire colours identify the common — they often don't, especially in older installs. Test, don't trust colour.
  • Replacing a two-way mech with a one-way mech because it 'looked the same'.
  • Only checking one switch position when the fault is at the other end of the strap run.
  • Working on the switch live because the light was off — the straps can still be fed from the other end.

When to stop & escalate

If the strap run itself is damaged inside walls or ceilings, repairing fixed wiring is licensed work — plan the repair properly rather than improvising joints. Anything involving intermediate (three-position) switching that doesn't map cleanly needs methodical dead-testing, not guesswork.

If you're past your competence, authorisation, or the safe limits of the job — stop and hand it on. There's no fault worth getting hurt over.
