Light switch warm, buzzing or crackling

A switch plate feels warm to touch, buzzes, or crackles when operated. Lights may flicker as you toggle it, and there can be a faint hot-plastic smell.

Safety first

Heat and smell at a switch can mean a connection is arcing behind the plate — a fire risk. Isolate the circuit before removing the plate; don't keep operating a switch that's crackling under load.

Isolate, lock out / tag out, and prove dead before working unless a live test is specifically required, authorised, and carried out under proper supervision. Always follow local regulations, your site procedures, and the equipment manufacturer's documentation.

    Loose terminal behind the switch

    Most likely

    A conductor not clamped tight arcs at the terminal every time current flows, generating heat that you feel through the plate and a buzz/crackle you can hear.

    Dimmer overloaded or mismatched with LED load

    A dimmer run near its rating, or one not rated for the LED drivers fitted, can run hot and buzz. The load may exceed what the dimmer can dissipate.

    Worn switch mechanism arcing internally

    Pitted or worn contacts inside the switch arc as they make and break, heating the body and causing crackle as the lights flicker.

    Undersized or back-stabbed connection

    Least likely

    Push-in 'back-stab' terminations or a stray strand can make a poor high-resistance joint that heats under load.

Browning, melted insulation, or a loose conductor confirms a heating connection — remake the termination and replace any heat-damaged accessory.

Common mistakes apprentices make

  • Re-tightening a terminal but reusing a switch whose body is already heat-damaged.
  • Fitting any dimmer without checking it suits the LED drivers and load.
  • Leaving a back-stabbed termination in place rather than moving to the screw terminal.
  • Dismissing a warm plate as 'normal' — switches should not run hot.

When to stop & escalate

If you find scorching inside the wall box or heat damage to the cable beyond the accessory, stop and investigate further — the cable may be compromised. Persistent heat after remaking terminations needs the load and circuit reviewed.

If you're past your competence, authorisation, or the safe limits of the job — stop and hand it on. There's no fault worth getting hurt over.
