Emergency-stop circuit dropping out intermittently
The machine trips on E-stop at random with nobody pressing a button — the safety string drops out, stops the machine, then resets fine, only to drop again later. A frustrating intermittent safety-circuit fault.
Safety first
This is a safety circuit — it's doing its job by stopping the machine. The fix is to find and repair the fault, never to bridge out or defeat any part of the E-stop string. Isolate before working on it and follow the safety drawings.

Common mistakes apprentices make
- Bridging out an E-stop or door switch to 'stop the nuisance trips' — defeating the safety function.
- Tightening one terminal and assuming the whole series string is now good.
- Ignoring cable flex in drag chains as the intermittent open.
- Replacing a safety relay with a non-equivalent device.
When to stop & escalate
Safety-circuit faults must be repaired, not bypassed — if you can't quickly and properly locate it, escalate and keep the machine out of service. Any change to a safety circuit must use correctly rated safety components and be verified per the machine's safety requirements.
If you're past your competence, authorisation, or the safe limits of the job — stop and hand it on. There's no fault worth getting hurt over.
