Bathroom 3-in-1 (heat lamp / fan / light) not working

An IXL Tastic-style 3-in-1 bathroom unit has lost one or more functions — heat lamps dead, fan not running, light out, or the whole unit lifeless. Which functions are dead tells you where to look.

Safety first

Most 3-in-1 units plug into a socket above the ceiling — isolate the circuit and prove dead before going into the ceiling space, and treat the roof space itself as a hazard (heat, low clearance, insulation over wiring).

Isolate, lock out / tag out, and prove dead before working unless a live test is specifically required, authorised, and carried out under proper supervision. Always follow local regulations, your site procedures, and the equipment manufacturer's documentation.

Likely causes

    Heat lamps blown

    Most likely

    The infrared heat lamps are consumables. One or more dead lamps with the fan and light still working is by far the most common finding.

    Thermal cutout tripped or failed

    Units overheat when ceiling insulation gets pushed over the housing or the fan side fails. The cutout kills the heat function (or the unit) — some auto-reset once cool, a failed one stays open.

    Wall switch bank fault

    The multi-gang switch that drives heat/fan/light takes a hammering. One failed mech kills exactly one function.

    Plug/socket connection in the ceiling space

    The unit's plug has been disturbed by trades or insulation work, or the ceiling socket itself has failed — usually kills the whole unit at once.

    Fan motor seized

    Least likely

    A seized or gummed fan motor stops the ventilation function, and the extra heat it causes can then trip the cutout and take the heat lamps with it.

One function dead points at its lamp/motor or its switch. Everything dead points at supply, plug or cutout.

2. For dead heat lamps: isolate, let the unit cool, then remove and inspect/continuity-test the lamps.
A good infrared lamp shows a continuous filament (a low resistance on continuity); blown ones show open-circuit or visible filament damage.
3. Whole unit dead: isolate and prove dead, then check the plug and socket above the ceiling — condition, seating, and supply present at the socket when re-energised for testing (per your procedure).
Socket healthy with supply present, plug firmly seated, no heat damage.
4. With the unit isolated and cooled: check the thermal cutout for continuity, and while you're there confirm insulation hasn't been pushed over the housing and the fan spins freely by hand.

Common mistakes apprentices make

  • Replacing heat lamps without asking why they died — a buried housing or dead fan cooks lamps repeatedly.
  • Forgetting the unit is usually plug-connected in the roof — chasing switch wiring while the plug's half out of the socket.
  • Ignoring the fan function because the customer only complained about heat — the fan failing is often the root cause.
  • Fitting higher-wattage lamps than the unit is rated for.

When to stop & escalate

If the unit's internal wiring or cutout is heat-damaged, weigh repair vs replacement honestly — these units are consumable appliances. Repairs to fixed wiring and the ceiling socket are licensed work. Repeated cutout trips with clear surroundings mean the unit itself is failing — replace it.

If you're past your competence, authorisation, or the safe limits of the job — stop and hand it on. There's no fault worth getting hurt over.
